The School of International Studies
The School of International Studies (SIS) was established in 2001 at the University of Trento as an advanced institute of interdisciplinary studies and has quickly become a leading reference point both in Italy and beyond for graduate teaching and research in international studies. The 20 faculty members bring together expertise from disciplines such as economics, law, politics, sociology, and history. SIS offers two Master’s degrees (European and International Studies; International Security Studies) and a Ph.D programme in International Studies.
Research Areas
The School builds on the diverse disciplinary background of its faculty to develop a wide portfolio of multidisciplinary research programs that address the challenges associated with the processes of globalization and European integration. The complexity of modern societies implies that no single disciplinary approach is sufficient to understand the rapid social, political, economic and institutional changes currently occurring both in Europe and worldwide.
Research activities at SIS revolve around three main broad topics:
1. the social, political, institutional and economic implications of a globally interconnected world
- the behavior of firms in international markets
- the emergence of China as a new global actor
- the relationship between international trade, natural resources and food security
2. international politics and security
- cyber-security, counter-terrorism, and data protection issues
- non-proliferation of nuclear weapons
- the relationship between military doctrines and military technology
- the changing role of international institutions, state and non-state actors in conflict situations
- development, the ecology and population as security issues
3. Europe between integration and disintegration
- the rising support for populist parties, its socio-economic determinants and its effects
- the protection of minority rights across Europe
- EU economics policy and its legitimacy
- EU economic relationship with contested territories
- cross border and interregional cooperation
